Ken and Dennis bring many years and a multitude of diving experiences to their diving courses and trips. Ken began diving the summer after his senior year in high school when he and some friends took a bus from Virginia to Miami and then hitchhiked through the Florida Keys diving as they went. At this time, you could dive without certification and equipment was minimal but functional. This trip hooked him on the thrill and adventure of seeing the sights underwater. He finally got certified as a diver during military service while stationed on Okinawa. Wanting to train others to skillfully enjoy what he was experiencing, he began teaching Scuba courses in 1976 throughout Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley including at James Madison University and various recreation departments and pools. A few times each year, he would take divers to dive the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, including Bimini, Freeport, and Andros Islands.
After owning a dive shop in the Shenandoah Valley, Ken left to teach English and coach sailing at a boarding school along the Rappahannock River near the Chesapeake Bay. While there, he continued teaching Scuba, introducing high school students and others to diving. He and his family also continued dive mastering dive trips to Bimini on Christmas breaks and sailing boats from Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahamas during summer breaks. After 10 years as an English teacher and volunteer paramedic, Ken joined the Newport News, Virginia Fire Department as a professional paramedic/firefighter. While there he also served on the department’s dive team and marine rescue unit. Ken moved to Colorado in 2005 to teach EMS at Colorado Mountain College and soon joined Colorado River Fire Rescue as a paramedic/firefighter and EMS instructor. Ken retired from CRFR in 2017 and has returned to providing memorable underwater experiences for his students and others.
Dennis learned to dive from Ken in 1982 and has been diving and teaching diving ever since. He taught classes in Virginia and then moved on to provide marine and dive training for at risk youth for the Associated Marine Institutes. He is a professional diver now who operates Diving Services and Solutions, LLC in south Florida. With that business, he and his staff provide underwater services to boat owners throughout Florida.
He continues to actively teach diving including pool sessions and training at the Blue Heron Bridge, a famous site for shore diving in Riviera Beach, Florida and he provides instruction using his custom dive boat, the SURFACE INTERVAL.
Both Ken and Dennis go on their scheduled trips in order to provide continuing education, dive adventures, and to provide ways for their divers to enjoy the amazing underwater world.
